Seizures and Epilepsies in Newborn and Respective Treatment

Abstract:

This post is also available in: English Slovenščina (Slovenian)

The author emphasizes the most frequently used clinical and functional contemporary approaches in diagnostics of neonatal seizures and presents all four newborn epilepsies which can already occur also in during this period. It includes all the drugs used and those mentioned in the current literature as successful remedies for refractory seizures. The lidocaine as well as benzodiazepine use is recommended during newborn period for the intractable status epilepticus especially on the neonatal intensive care units where ventilatory support for possible complications is easily obtainable. At the end also some of the newer antiepileptic drugs are mentioned as possible treatment for neonatal seizures, however there are not enough clinical studies yet.
