The aim of this article is to present some characteristics of the competitive youth sport and to point out some negative aspects that represent possible health hazards to children and adolescents participating in this sport.\u00a0The\u00ad results \u00adof \u00adstudies \u00adas \u00adwell \u00adas\u00ad sport \u00adpraxis show \u00adthat \u00adtalent \u00adrecognition \u00adis \u00ada \u00adcomplex \u00adand\u00ad demanding \u00adprocess.\u00ad Nowadays,\u00ad making predictions \u00adabout\u00ad competitive\u00ad performance \u00adin\u00ad adulthood\u00ad on\u00ad the \u00adbasis\u00ad of\u00ad results\u00ad achieved in\u00ad childhood \u00ador \u00adin \u00adearly \u00adadolescence \u00adis \u00adstill\u00ad highly\u00ad unreliable.\u00a0The\u00ad results \u00adalso \u00adshow\u00ad that early\u00ad involvement\u00ad in \u00ada \u00adspecialized\u00ad process\u00ad of \u00adsports\u00ad training \u00ad(e.g. sport\u00ad schools)\u00ad is\u00ad not \u00ada\u00ad guarantee \u00adfor\u00ad sport\u00ad successfulness \u00adlater\u00ad in \u00adadulthood.\u00ad Quite\u00ad the \u00adcontrary,\u00ad early \u00adspecialization in \u00adchildhood \u00adsuppresses \u00adlong-term\u00ad athletic\u00ad development\u00ad of\u00ad children\u00ad and\u00ad endangers \u00adtheir health.\u00ad The\u00ad models \u00adbased\u00ad on \u00adpostponed\u00ad specialization,\u00ad long-term\u00ad and\u00ad systematic\u00ad work\u00ad with youth\u00ad and\u00ad with\u00ad humane\u00ad pedagogical\u00ad approach\u00ad are\u00ad those \u00adthat\u00ad lead \u00adtowards\u00ad athletes’\u00ad successful\u00ad development \u00adand\u00ad creativity \u00adin\u00ad sport.\u00ad\u00a0On the basis of a systematic approach to this topic, some concrete suggestions can be made and some procedures for practical operation and the improvement of this important segment of sport in Slovenia can be recommended:\u00a0Children participating in sport should not undergo too demanding specialized sports training oriented only to one sport; young athletes can be trained only by educated coaches with necessary skills and strong character; young athletes should have regular medical check-ups done by qualified paediatricians; coaches, members of club boards and national sports associations as well as parents and young athletes should be educated on regular basis.<\/p>\n
