Four healthy male subjects participated in a total of 11 trials, imulating a range of possible outdoor scenarios. The rectal, esophageal and four skin temperatures, oxygen uptake, minute ventilation and heart rate were measured during 2 hour exposures in a climatic chamber. On the basis of these measurements, body heat storage and the rate of heat loss were also calculated. Only the mean skin temperature was significantly (P < 0.05) higher when the subjects wore the MPS suit above their light or heavy clothing. It was concluded that the main benefit of the MPS suit was attenuation of conductive and convective heat loss, and that its effect on radiative heat loss was negligible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
This study evaluated the thermal protection provided by suits made of metallized plastic sheeting (MPS) in a variety of environmental conditions.
