In cases of suspect acute hepatitis where cholestatic jaundice is the leading symptom, extrahepatic cholestasis must first be excluded. In the next diagnostic step we try to define the aetiology of the disease on the basis of epidemiological data, clinical picture, laboratory and serological tests. A case of acute hepatitis in a 52-year-old female with marked jaundice but otherwise poor symptoms and signs is presented.
