The most important and also the best known degradation pathway\u00a0is autophagy, where a sequestrating membrane\u00a0separates a part of the cytoplasm so forming an\u00a0autophagic vacuole. Degradation of the autophagic vacuole ingredients starts after the fusion of the\u00a0autophagic vacuole with a lysosome. Some cytosolic proteins are introduced to a lysosom by\u00a0a heat-shock protein (Hsp 70) in a process called\u00a0carrier mediated proteolysis. Another pathway of\u00a0lysosomal protein degradation is crinophagy where\u00a0the secretory vesicles containing newly synthesised\u00a0proteins fuse with the lysosomal membrane instead\u00a0of fusing with the plasma membrane. Part of the\u00a0proteolysis is localised in the cytosol and is known\u00a0as nonlysosomal proteolysis. In this degradation,\u00a0large protein complexes proteasomes and protein\u00a0ubiquitin are involved. The degradation products\u00a0are reused for the synthesis of new cell components.
