They present family, twin and adoption\u00a0studies wich have reinforced the role of genetic\u00a0factors in the aetiology of schizophrenia. Next they\u00a0discuss various inheritance patterns, the hypothesis of the site of a single gene locus for schizophrenia and role of non-genetics factors. Recent\u00a0studies aimed at detecting and localizing the\u00a0dominant gene linked to schizophrenia on a locus\u00a0of chromosome 6 seem most promising, yet evidence is accumulating that the mode of inheritance\u00a0is either polygenic (caused by many genes exerting slight effects), or oligogenic (caused by a few\u00a0genes exerting moderate effects), with an important role being played by environmental factors.\u00a0Modern genetic methods will certainly improve our\u00a0understanding of the aetiology and development\u00a0of schizophrenia in the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The authors give a brief description of\u00a0schizophrenia based on the established international criteria, and discuss its epidemiology and\u00a0aetiology.
