Sensory\u00a0return after end-to-side anastomosis has been\u00a0investigated in only one study in which the donor\u00a0nerve was interrupted distally to the anastomosis. There have been no reports on the use of\u00a0an uninjured donor nerve to date. The present\u00a0study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that\u00a0recovery of sensory function of a transected nerve can be induced by using end-to-side anastomosis to an uninjured nerve. The distal stump\u00a0of the transected peroneal nerve was approximated end to side to the intact sural nerve using\u00a0epineural sutures. Sprouting of sensory axons\u00a0into the anastomosed peroneal nerve was assessed by the nerve pinch test, and the number of\u00a0myelinated axons was determined on a tissue\u00a0cross-section stained with Azur II. The myelinated axons were counted and their cross-section\u00a0areas were determined for the sural nerves of\u00a0both the operated and control animals. Pain\u00a0sensitivity of the foot instep skin was assessed\u00a0by the skin pinch test. Over the period of\u00a018 weeks after end-to-side anastomosis of the\u00a0transected peroneal nerve to the intact sural nerve, the axons sprouted into the peroneal nerve\u00a0in all the 11 animals operated. The pinch test in\u00a0the anastomosed distal stump of the peroneal\u00a0was positive in all animals as far as it was possible to test. There were 277 \u00b1119 myelinated<br \/>\naxons in the anastomosed peroneal nerve, their\u00a0cross section area being mostly smaller than 10 \u03bcm<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a018 weeks after anastomosis, partial\u00a0sensitivity of the instep skin (19\u201340 % of the surface area of the peronneal nerve innervation\u00a0territory) was documented in three of the 11 animals. The remainder showed no pain sensitivity\u00a0in this region.
