Erythromelalgia is a rare syndrome characterised by attacks of severe burning pain, erythema, and warmth of the extremities-primarily the\u00a0feet and, to a lesser extend, the hands. The distress is induced by environmental heat, exercise,\u00a0and dependency; it is relieved by exposure to cold\u00a0and elevation of the extremity. Idiopathic and secondary forms of erythromelalgia exist. Secondary\u00a0erythromelalgia has been linked to a wide variety\u00a0of diseases, the most common of which are certain\u00a0myeloproliferative disorders. This type affect adults\u00a0only, and is dramatically ameliorated by small\u00a0doses of aspirin. Intravascular platelet activation and\u00a0aggregation, with plugging of arterioles have been\u00a0suggested as the cause of erythromelalgia in myeloproliferative disorders.
