Relevant terminology is outlined and the incidence, etiology and diverse clin\u00adical pictures of these infections are presented. The importance of accurate diagnosis based on proper urine collection and the need for prompt therapy, especially in the first year of life, are stressed. This is followed by a description of treatment, prognosis and morphologic studies with function tests done after first infection. A modern algorithm of investigations to be performed in children after first urinary tract infection and in those who are healthy or seemingly healthy, but at the highest risk of permanent renal damage, is presented. The content of this article was harmonized and approved by the medical board of the Department of Pediatric Nephrology, and represents the current doctrine of this clinical department.
