For the past 20 years, the incidence of malaria has been increasing. This increase can be attributed, in large part, to increasing resistance of <em>Plasmodium falciparum<\/em> to current antimalarial drugs, to the appearance of <em>Plasmodium<\/em> in nonendemic areas and to the increase in travel to and migration from areas where malaria is endemic.
