The official classification of the diseases deals only with those clinical entities which are related to serious mental and physical problems. Eating disorders encountered in practice range from transient, reactive forms to fixed disease processes affecting all organic systems. Somatic complications of eating disorders are well known to physicians in different areas; yet the psychogenesis of these conditions is often underestimated and the decision for a comprehensive treatment is made all too infrequently.
