Standard anterior-posterior radiographs of hip and pelvis of 79 healthy adult female and 21 healthy adult male hips and pelvises were measured using a computer-assisted system. Data analysis included descriptive statistical methods. A comparison of geometrical parameters of female and male hips and pelvises showed that women had a smaller femoral head and a wider pelvis than men, which seems to account for increased articular stress in the female hip. The results suggest that increased articular stress may be one of the reasons for the greater incidence of hip arthrosis in women.
