The proximal interphalangeal joint may dislocate in one of the three possible directions: dorsal, lateral or palmar. The direction is determined by the position of the middle phalanx in relation to the proximal phalanx. Despite frequent dislocation injuries of the proximal interphalangeal joint, these kinds of injuries are still often inappropriately treated, which leads to stiffness, painful movement or flexion contracture of a joint. The purpose of the article is to review dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal joint.
