Cholesterol embolisation

Abstract:

This post is also available in: English Slovenščina (Slovenian)

Renal cholesterol embolization can occur spontaneously or arises as a complication of invasive diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures on the aorta and its major vessels, including transplantations, in patients with advanced atherosclerosis. The final diagnosis can usually be established with certainty only by histologic examination of adequate tissue specimens showing pathognomonic cholesterol embolisms of different age. The authors present a 62-year old male patient with acute renal failure caused by spontaneous atheroembolic disease, discovered on renal biopsy. After a ten-month follow-up period, the disease process subsided and the patient’s renal function stabilized. In view of the advanced age of our patients and the fairly high rate of procedures on the major vessels, the differential diagnosis of acute renal failure or deterioration of renal function should include also cholesterol embolization.
