Clinical Sports Nutriton: from Theory to Practice
The basic physiological purpose of sports clinical nutrition is to provide the energy in the form of metabolic fuels (nutrients) in the right quantity and at the right time for specific sport activity. Energy and nutritional needs of the athlete are determined by the metabolic characteristics of the individual and the metabolic requirements of training load (duration, intensity and type of physical activity or sport). For the nutritional evaluation of the athlete, we follow the recommendations established within the field of clinical sports nutrition regarding energy and nutrient intake as well as fluid replacement for specific requirements of physical activity or sport. In practice, we encounter many nutritional problems that directly affect the athlete’s performance, well-being and health.
