Disturbances of Auditory Perception

Auditory perception is prone to disturbances on various levels. The article deals with those usually encountered in patients with mental disorders, auditory hallucinations being the most frequent. The article also presents phenomena, which are similar to auditory hallucinations and are hence important in differential diagnosis. It is important for physician to know the differences between various disturbances of auditory perception. This knowledge enables him to make a correct diagnosis and to take appropriate steps. When auditory hallucinations or illusions cause the patient to be violent against himself or others, urgent measures are neces­sary. Certain disturbances of auditory perceptions may also be experienced by healthy indi­viduals and do not require special treatment.
