Down syndrome – laboratory diagnosis

Abstract:

This post is also available in: English Slovenščina (Slovenian)

Measurements of total chorionic gonadotropin, free estradiol and alpha-fetoprotein levels in the serum of pregnant women permit identification of a combined risk for congenital malformations of the foetus. In Down syndrome, the concentrations of these three parameters differ significantly from the median values in pregnancy with a normal kariotype (for a given gestation week).
