Food-borne diseases caused by fish and shellfish ingestion are described. The most important viral, bacterial and parasitic infections are characterized, several of which are connected almost exclusively to the fish and shellfish consumption. A special attention is paid to cholera and Norwalk virus gastroenteritis which are the most frequent syndromes affecting a large number of people. The importance and the need for prevention of these diseases is especially emphasized.
