Facial palsy causes substantive disfiguration and functional deficit of the affected side of the face. Treatment of facial palsy differs and depends on the underlying cause. When facial palsy is definitive and spontaneous regeneration of the facial nerve is not expected, then reconstructive procedures for facial reanimation are necessary. The aim of this article is to show the modern principles of facial reanimation and to stress the importance of an early referral of patients with definitive facial palsy to the specialized centers.
