Treatment of Congenital Clubfoot: Surgical Technique

Basic principles of conservative and operative treatment of congenital clubfoot are presented. Redressing therapy with casting is started on the first day after the birth. Varus, adductus and supination components of congenital clubfoot are gradually corrected while forcible reduction of the equinus component is never attempted. Infants are operated on at the age between 6 and 12 months. In mild forms of congenital clubfoot posterior releases with elongation of the Achilles tendon are performed. In severe forms of congenital clubfoot complex soft tissue releases on the lateral, posterior and medial aspects of the foot and in subtalar region are performed with elongation of several tendons and reposition of the forefoot.
