The paper gives some basic informa­tion about the legislation governing obligations and benefits related to sick leave. The methods of sick leave data collection and analysis are presented, as well as the aims pursued by analysing and interpreting the collected data. The author makes a few suggestions about how to reduce sick leave rates, and describes some general principels to be followed by a general practitioner issuing a medical certificate of one’s incapacity to work because of illness.
