We studied 30 patients with stroke within the first 21 days of the onset of the symptoms by determining their plasma adrenaline and noradrenalin levels, their neurological status and the correlation between them. The neurological status was found to improve gradually, mean plasma noradrenaline levels exceeded normal values throughout the study, while mean adrenaline concentrations remained within the range of normal. Mean cortisol, a stress indicator, was higher than normal on days 1, 2 and 21 in females, and on day 2 in males. The study failed to reveal any statistically significant correlation between the neurological status and noradrenaline levels, but a statistically significant correlation was found between the neurological status and adrenaline and cortisol levels. The two phenomena, however, are unrelated.
