Secondary Amyloidosis with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Nephrotic Syndrome
Amyloidosis is a group of diseases for which extracellular deposition of a fibrillary protein called amyloid is typical. There are many types of amyloidoses. Secondary amyloidosis is connected with pre-existing inflammatory disorders, which also include inflammatory bowel disease. The kidneys are important target organs, which explains the fact that proteinuria is usually the first sign of amyloid deposition in the kidneys. Nephrotic syndrome is important for prognosis of this disease. The diagnosis of secondary amyloidosis requires pathohistochemical and immunohistochemical tests. The treatment of secondary amyloidosis is limited to colchicin therapy and healing of the underlying inflammatory process and its complications.
The authors presented a rare disease, secondary amyloidosis with nephrotic syndrome associated with inflammatory bowel disease.
